Many neurodegenerative disease share common pathological features: the misfolding and aggregation of key proteins. Under normal circumstances, there are cellular mechanisms that efficiently degrade these proteins into their components for recycling. However, in some cases the misfolding leads to protein aggregation, which in turn can lead into an aggregation cascade that is self-propagating. Ultimately, misfolding of proteins and protein aggregation undermine a cell’s operational efficiency and the process becomes toxic.
